EJ Hauser
ROOM 703
Building on themes of transformation and
mythology, Hauser uses drawing as a starting
point for pushing the language of painting
into new territories. Employing text and
iconographic images in repetition,
Hauser’s paintings emerge directly from her
playful engagement with drawing, a process
she calls “drawing lab,” that she continuously
engages in the studio. Her observational
drawings come from a host of admired objects
or other drawings and paintings. Hauser’s
archetypes vary widely and do not immediately
evoke thematic similarities: megalithic heads,
text, and groups of smiling entities. This work
underscores and evaluates the fundamental
exchange of energy and ideas between maker
and viewer — “ME + YOU” — and by extension,
the process of making and viewing visual
work today.
