“Boats and swimmers appear in my paintings
because the surfaces I create with paint tend
to resemble water. I love wide expanses of
brushed on color. My favorite ships are ocean
liners, especially the Titanic, with red striped
smokestacks (although the actual Titanic had
yellow stacks). To see the black rectangle of the
Titanic near the white pyramid of a dangerous
iceberg seems to me to provide the ultimate
visual and psychological tension. As for my
favorite swimmers they are the ones that tend
to merge visually with their surroundings. For
example I like to make their bathing suits look
like they are made from the same color cloth as
the surrounding sky.”
