Alessandra Gómez on Art Discovery and New York

For our ongoing series “Le Guestbook,” we sit down with neighbors, regulars, and friends who make Wythe feel like home. This week, we spoke with Alessandra Gómez, Wythe's talented Art Curator, about her curatorial process, art in the city, and Le Crocodile.

How do you take your coffee?

An iced oat milk latte with sugar, but not too sweet.

Your go-to Le Crocodile order?

The Frisée Salad with Poached Egg and Smoked Eel is perfect.

Any suggestions for management?

No notes. 10/10.

How do you go about finding artists and art?

My curiosity guides me. I often attend performances and exhibitions without necessarily knowing the artist or what to expect, though there is usually something in the show description or images of past work that initially draws me in.

Best place in New York to see art?

I’m more drawn to experimental and artist-run spaces, where the stakes feel different and there’s often more room for risk. Those are the places where you tend to encounter new artists early in their practice, and where there’s a real opportunity to build relationships and support their work over time. For me, it’s less about a single best place to experience art and more about maintaining an ongoing sense of discovery.

Upcoming Wythe projects that you’re particularly excited about?

I’m currently working on acquiring the next set of artworks for our collection. We’ve also re-started our monthly life drawing sessions at Wythe led by Tamara Gonzales, Loren Erdrich, and Karen Lederer. The models are local Brooklyn performance artists, and they often come in costume or take on more unconventional poses.

A word of advice for someone trying to get involved in the NYC art scene?

I love seeing shows with friends and other artists, and I’m really grateful for the friends and artists who show up for the shows I organize. There’s a real generosity in that kind of support in New York—building community also takes consistency and patience!
